Imiquimod is an immune response modifier, which means it stimulates the immune system in treated areas. It is applied topically to the skin and used to treat topical conditions, such as skin growths, most commonly:

  • Actinic keratosis
  • Superficial basal cell carcinoma
  • External genital warts

The medication is a cream, which comes in single-use packets or in metered-dose pumps. It is available in strengths ranging from 2.5% to 5%; be sure to buy Imiquimod in the strength recommended by your doctor, as administration can vary depending on dosage. Also note that the medication can cause serious side effects if used improperly; do not buy Imiquimod to treat undiagnosed conditions.

This product is also known by the brand names Aldara and Zyclara.

What to Expect from Treatment

Imiquimod is applied topically directly to affected areas for 6 weeks to 4 months. While administration varies by condition, there are some common elements of treatment for all conditions:

  • The medication should be applied at bedtime so it will remain undisturbed on the skin for at least 6 to 8 hours;
  • Imiquimod should never be applied to mucous membranes, open wounds, or infected areas of the skin;
  • Avoid intercourse if applied to genitals, as it can cause irritation for the partner;
  • Do not cover treated areas with airtight bandages or other dressings which prevent the skin from breathing.

Otherwise, use and duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated.

For actinic keratosis:

  • Apply the cream to affected area and rub in gently until it disappears.
  • Repeat treatment every 3 days for 6 to 12 weeks if using stronger doses (5% cream).
  • Repeat treatment once daily for 2 weeks, take a 2 week break, resume daily treatment for 2 weeks, and so on for 8 weeks if using lower doses (2.5% to 3.75% cream).

For superficial basal cell carcinoma:

  • Apply a thin layer of the cream over the affected area, extending to skin about 12 mm (0.5 inches) around the tumor.
  • Repeat treatment 5 times a week for 6 weeks regardless of strength (2.5% to 5% cream).

For external genital warts:

  • Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area; preferably only on warts, but a small amount on surrounding skin is okay.
  • Repeat treatment 3 days a week for up to 16 weeks regardless of strength (2.5% to 5% cream); it may be stopped sooner if warts disappear.
  • Treatment may be repeated as-needed if warts reappear in the future.

Regular doctor checkups are highly advisable during treatment for all conditions.

Adverse Effects

Serious reactions are rare if used properly, but there are some potentially harmful effects to be aware of before you buy Imiquimod:

  • Treated areas may be more sensitive to sunlight and should be covered if exposed to UV rays to prevent severe burns.
  • The medication may cause permanent pigment changes in treated areas, turning skin lighter or darker.
  • Some women experience severe swelling of the vulva which can interfere with urination; stop use and seek medical attention if unable to urinate.

Most side effects are much milder and not cause for concern:

  • Scabbing, flaking or scaling or skin at application site
  • Mild burning, itching or tingling at application site
  • Flu-like symptoms, including mild fever and headaches

If the medication produces blistering, ulcers, discharge, severe pain, or other symptoms of infection, stop use until speaking with a doctor.
